Dongsung Chemical has undertaken a significant restructuring of its business operations, divesting its composite division and subsidiary, Dongsung TCS.

On May 2nd, the company announced the completion of all necessary procedures following the signing of a business transfer agreement for the composite division and a share purchase agreement for the entire stake of Dongsung TCS with SGPE in April.

Dongsung Chemical took over Dongsung TCS in 2014. Later it merged the composites division of Dongsung TCS through a spin-off in 2017. In response to global efforts to combat climate change, Korean industries are teaming up to cut carbon emissions in the outdoor sector.

On the 18th, Dongsung Chemical, SK chemicals, and BYN Black Yak proudly announced their joint achievement: the development of a sustainable footwear material using naturally derived ‘ECOTRION’, now seamlessly integrated into Black Yak’s trekking shoes ‘343 MAX’.

This spring’s release of the eco-friendly trekking shoes is garnering attention for their functionality and contribution to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, aligning with the trend of value-driven consumption.

The collaboration among these three companies throughout the year led to the introduction of this innovative product. SK chemicals supplied the 100% bio-based polyol, ‘ECOTRION’, enabling Dongsung Chemical to develop ‘NEOPAN®’, the bio-polyurethane resin for footwear applications. Ultimately, Black Yak utilized this material to create the ‘Foot Pillow Cushioning Foam’, designed to alleviate strain on the ankle and knee joints. This foam has been strategically applied to the heel support layer of the midsole.

The performance of a trekking shoe largely depends on the midsole. Cushioning is crucial as it absorbs shock and provides stability over rough terrain.

Dongsung Chemical’s ‘NEOPAN’ stands out by retaining the elasticity and elongation of existing polyurethane resins, even with bio-based materials. This formulation has enabled the achievement of essential shock absorption required for the ‘Foot Pillow Cushioning Foam’.

SK chemicals’ ‘ECOTRION’, utilized in ‘NEOPAN®’, is an eco-friendly material that uses raw materials to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 40% compared to conventional petrochemical raw materials. It is extensively used in the production of spandex, artificial leather, and urethane elastic materials, all of which face recycling challenges. ‘ECOTRION’ has one less carbon than petrochemical materials, resulting in a spiral polymer structure, which makes it possible to create products with high elastic resilience like a spring.

Sustainability has emerged as a significant trend spanning across all industries, with particular emphasis on the outdoor sector. A presentation at ISPO Munich 2023, the world’s largest sporting goods trade fair, highlighted that 38% of consumers expressed a willingness to switch brands in favor of those prioritizing climate-friendliness. This trend underscores the proactive approach to exploring sustainable materials.

Black Yak plans to diversify its product portfolio and enhance its image and sales by actively incorporating eco-friendly materials.

Ha Sung-chan, Head of Black yak’s Planning Business Division, stated, “The ‘343 MAX’, the first commercialized product applying bio-based materials, is attracting consumer attention for its combination of sustainability and top-notch functionality, ranging from its environmental impact to its exceptional shock-absorbing cushioning. Moving forward, we are committed to advancing our eco-friendly technologies and fostering collaborations with diverse partners to drive innovation in sustainable fashion.”

Dongsung Chemical and SK chemicals aim to gradually expand the bio-material market in the sports and fashion fields through collaboration with major domestic and international brands.

Noh Joong-sik, Head of Dongsung Chemical’s Polyurethane Business Division, explained, “We’re actively pursuing collaborations with footwear brands, leveraging the environmental benefits and exceptional properties of our bio-polyurethane resin ‘NEOPAN.’ Our proficiency in resin formulation and synthesis technology allows us to optimize the features and functionality of each footwear, offering customized solutions to meet customer demands.”

Kim Eung-soo, Head of SK chemicals’ Green Materials Business Division, stated, “Bio-materials, along with recycled plastics, are one of the promising alternatives to replace petrochemical materials. We plan to actively highlight the sustainability and functionality of PO3G, focusing on big brands that lead the sustainable trend with bio-materials.”

With the global surge in decarbonization initiatives, the demand for environmentally friendly packaging materials is on the rise. In response to this, Dongsung Chemical has developed an eco-friendly bead foam, providing an alternative to expanded polystyrene (EPS) for the first time in Korea.

Under its biodegradable packaging brand, ECOVIVA®, the company has launched bead foam crafted entirely from plant-based biomass, serving as a substitute for Styrofoam.

Styrofoam, widely used in packaging for its cushioning and insulating properties, takes hundreds of years to decompose after disposal. In contrast, ECOVIVA Bead Foam boasts a decomposition rate of over 90% within six months under specific temperature and humidity conditions. Moreover, the production process of this material reduces carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 70% compared with styrofoam production.

Dongsung Chemical plans to supply ECOVIVA Bead Foam to various industries, including electrical and electronic products, sporting goods, fresh food, and pharmaceutical cold chains. Additionally, the company aims to further develop and expand its product lineup. This includes bead foam that can biodegrade in marine environments and also in normal soil at room temperature.

Fostering bioplastics as a new business aligned with the global net-zero transition trend, Dongsung Chemical focuses on biodegradable packaging materials. In 2021, the company launched its ECOVIVA line, which includes bubble wrap and ice packs. Alongside the bead foam, the company is developing functional films and adhesives. Furthermore, the company is gearing up for the opening ceremony of the Ulsan Bioplastic Complex in April, aimed at scaling up mass production technology.

Manwoo Lee, CEO of Dongsung Chemical, stated, “ECOVIVA Bead Foam serves as a significant alternative to single-use plastics and their associated problems. We are committed to accelerating the development of biodegradable packaging materials, aiming to provide a comprehensive solution for sustainable and eco-friendly packaging.”

Dongsung Chemical is strategically driving growth by significantly enhancing its fine chemical business through the expansion of its organic peroxide production capacity.

The company announced on the 23rd that it will invest $10 million by the end of October next year to expand organic peroxide facilities at the Yeosu plant site. When the expansion is completed, organic peroxide production capacity is expected to increase by more than 4,000 tons per year compared to the previous figure. It is expected that productivity will also improve by 36% by streamlining processes of manufacturing.

Dongsung Chemical recently demolished 70% of its petrochemical facilities at its Yeosu plant. Instead of petrochemical industry with high carbon emissions and low profitability, to build a sustainable business system, the company plans to invest in fine-chemical industry which possesses high growth potential.

Through this expansion, Dongsung Chemical expects to actively respond to the demand for organic peroxide and expansion of its overseas market share by five times more. The company also plans to secure new markets by developing peroxide using powder-type peroxide and acid-based processes that rely on imports. The production of TBHP(t-Butyl hydroperoxide), a raw material for organic peroxide production, will also be expanded to actively target the non-captive market.

Demand for organic peroxide, which is the key material used as polymer initiator such as LDPE (Low Density Polyethylene), PVC (Polyvinyl chloride) and also used as crosslinking agent for EVA(ethylene vinyl acetate) sheets, is steadily increasing since the polymer market is expanding.

According to Global Info Research, a market research firm, global polymer market is forecasted to grow annually 3.8% per year by 2028. In particular, the International Energy Agency predicts that the EVA market will increase by an average of 9.8% per year by 2028 due to increasing demand for solar power as the renewable energy market grows.

ManWoo Lee, CEO of Dongsung Chemical, stated, “We are reducing the existing petrochemical business and speeding up constitution improvement for future growth. We will develop the fine-chemical business into an eco-friendly high value-added business based on the technology we have accumulated over the past decades since entering the fine-chemical business in 1990.”

Meanwhile, Dongsung Chemical succeeded in commercial production of DCP (Dicumyl Peroxide) and CHP (Cumyl Hydroperoxide) for the first time in Korea in 2017 through the fine-chemical business, contributing to the stable supply of wire covering crosslinking agents and foaming agents. In 2022, the company established a stable supply chain by localizing TBHP, which had been entirely dependent on imports.
